Confessions, or Struggling with Minimalism

Well, you guys, I did some good shopping this weekend. I bought some dresses that I LOVE.

My friend and I went shopping at Salvation Army and Goodwill. These three dresses combined cost me less than $35. Seriously. I am a thrift-a-holic. —–>

However I am also serious about sticking with my 33 items limit, and I want to share my plan for incorporating my new dresses into my minimalist wardrobe.

First, here’s what I bought.

I love the brand of this dress, although it tends to be a little low-cut. Hence I’m wearing a slip underneath it. I like how that looks, though! I think the contract of the lace with the modern print in the dress is sexy.

Turquoise isn’t a color that I usually wear, but I want to change that. I have a few items of turquoise jewelry that I like to wear with pinks and navy blues. I am excited for all of those items to get more use with this dress. Plus I can wear it with brown or nude shoes. I think this one is going to be surprisingly versatile dress.

Whoa. I got crazy taking pictures in the Man’s man cave.

I love this dress so much. Isn’t it pretty? Purple is kind of “my color”, and I just love the way this one fits. Plus the ruffles around the collar are so cute; I can’t even stand it.

For some reason, this dress makes me feel all WWII, can-do, Rosie the Riveter.  I know that wrap dresses hadn’t been invented yet, but there’s something about the collar or the silhouette or something that makes me feel that way. I know I’m going to end up wearing this to work a lot. Dresses are so easy to wear! They make my life so much easier.

The full length shot of the dress doesn’t really do it justice. Here’s what the print looks like up close:

So you are probably asking yourself how I’m going to add these dresses to my wardrobe and still stick with my limit of 33 items.

First, I’m not going to add the purple dress to my wardrobe right now. I’m putting it away with my winter clothes. I think that’s going to be a great holiday-time dress for different parties, but it doesn’t seem very practical for every day. And I already have two “fancy dress party” dresses in my closet (which are more weather appropriate), so I’m going to save that one for the fall/winter.

Second, I am swapping two items for the other two dresses.

That blazer is wonderful, but it’s too hot for the weather now. That is also going in with my winter clothes.

The dress… Well. I guess I just don’t love it anymore. I haven’t worn it in a while, and when I do, I feel like it’s boxy and shapeless. Yuck. So, adios dress. It was great while it lasted. Really, it’s not you; it’s me.

So there you have it! A weekend shopping splurge could have been a minimalist’s nightmare, but I managed to negotiate the consequences…this time. I don’t plan on doing any shopping for myself again for a while; there isn’t anything that I need.

How was your weekend? I hope you did some things to renew your soul. Happy Monday!
