Adios, Clothes

So some of you asked what I took out of my closet. Here they are!

Top left – clockwise

5 cardigans/shrugs

2 workout shirts & 1 swimsuit

1 pair of black pants & 2 skirts

3 dresses

2 long sleeve shirts

9 short sleeve/sleeveless shirts

And I just realized that I have some shirts that are on hangers that I moved to the guest bedroom closet. So they aren’t in this pictures. But there are probably another 5 – 8 shirts that aren’t in here.

What I took out is about 2/3 of what I kept. That’s why I had to let them go – there were too many clothes in my closet and my dresser! I couldn’t find things, hangers would fall on the floor in the closet, and I was frustrated when I would get dressed.

Now getting dressed is fun again! Seriously, I’m really enjoying it. I have made two brand new outfits in the past week that I wouldn’t have thought of if I had more clothes. And I love what I’m wearing these days. Win/win/win!

OK, I need some help with some other parts of the house! Advice please for minimizing my kitchen and crafting hoards!

  1. Great job with your closet purge! Coming up with new outfits is always a fun!

The kitchen is a tough spot for me too, especially since I cook almost every day. It helped me to first get rid of single-purpose items that I didn’t use often (or that I had something else I could use in it’s place — think, like, a quesadilla press – I didn’t need that, I could do that in a pan on the stove!). Then I really thought about my cooking habits – the types of foods I prepared most often and the pots/pans/tools/etc I reached for, and I saved all those things, and got rid of any duplicates. Lastly, I looked at more of my specialty items and thought about how often I used them, if it was twice a year or more, I kept it (we entertain large family groups a couple of times a year, so certain items come in handy for big crowds). If I couldn’t remember the last time I used it, it was in the donation pile. Good luck!

    • Great advice, Clara! Thank you! I love multi-purpose items, but I hadn’t thought about specifically getting rid of single-purpose items. I’m going to be ruthless. :)

  2. I’m the wrong person to ask about crafting hoards. You’ve seen my workroom. It should be an episode of Hoarders. And I’m OK with it for now but I am getting tired of tripping over things and I sometimes lose the cats in there.

As for the kitchen…I’ve removed many of the things I use only when entertaining and put them in boxes in the basement. I don’t want to get rid of them but I don’t want them taking up “upstairs” space either. One thing I do need to address is my coffee mugs. I clearly have too many of them for one person. I did see an interesting window display where someone planted little jade trees in old coffee mugs – thought that was a great idea.

    Good luck!

    • Since that’s how you make your money, I think you get a pass on having a messy work room. :) I have no excuse.

I like the idea of planting plants in coffee mugs! I’ll have to think about that one. Hmm….
